1 minute film challenge

The Ring - One Minute Film Challenge

Evaluation

In the process of creating this film our group (Allen, Claire, Chay)  went through three stages,  deciding, filming, editing.

Deciding

We mainly focused on remaking a film rather than being creative as we all had a particular interest on a horror genre movie. We browse through film trailers, some required a lot more props and was set in a location we could not work with like in the forest. Eventually we came across The Ring, simple trailer with a straight forward plot that required minimal props and can be filmed in the location we were in. After agreeing on The Ring we didn't have to bring any props in for the next day so we skipped the planning process and went straight to the filming on the next day.

Filming

We first tried to find a dark room to film in so it fits with the horror genre. During our filming process we tried to film so that we limit the audience of vision to create suspension. We had 4 characters, Chay and allen as the main character, Claire as the ghost and me as a external character. We based our filming on the trailer, minimal dialogue, very fast moving shots.

Editing

During the editing we used the program final cut pro X we thought the film was not scary at first with all the shots we took,  so we used a sound track to create suspension as its gets louder as the video goes along.

What we did well
- Good communication
- We used a lot of camera angles

What we could do to improve
- Spread responsibility equally
- Making more intense jump scare.

Heat Homework

Heat opening analyzing

Extreme close up

This shot was taken when this guy walk into a new room. By limiting what the audience sees, tension is built up, as the audience become curious of what the man is looking at. This also shows that this man is calm and controlled as he looks confident and knows what he is doing.

Overhead shot
This shot is taken when the robbery is taken place. This give the audience the sense of the man with the gun having control over everyone else as everyone else is on the floor and he is standing up.
Mid close up
This shot is taken when the robbery is taken place. This gives the audience an understanding of what the civilians and guards are feeling. This shot shows that they are scared and also open to follow the robbers orders. This is also shot at a high angle looking down at the security guard which shows lack of power.
Extreme Long shot
The shot above shows many policemen and police cars on the clear road. This gives the audiences the feeling of being surrounded and in the position of the bank robbers. This creates tension along with the music to further prolong the wait of a fallen party during the shooting.
Over the shoulder shot
This shot is taken during the shooting, it gives the audience a more intimate and involvement in the danger. As it shows both the shooter and police but with a slight angle which may imply he has a slight advantage over the police. Police also seem small in the background which may suggest weakness etc.
Medium shot
This shot is handheld and pushing in towards the shooter. This may show an increase in pressure or tension . Due to the instability of the camera this may tell that the guy is getting tired. The shot also makes him look bigger which may suggest he has more power over the police.

Low angle.
This shot is taken at a low angle which has the audience looking at the shooter which puts him in a position of power also sky may suggest freedom to show that they might have a chance of actually getting away.
Tracking shot
Moving from left to right shows progression. Shaking camera add to chaos and uncertainty.
The line in the background above the shooter that gets closer to the shooter  may suggest is being squeezed in the corner.
